Challenge
Design a product, app or a service that fosters the participation of women in the STEM workforce. Project actvities
Literature review | Experts interviews | Design sprint | Brand identity | High-Fidelity prototyping | Concept testing Outcome
International 'DiversItUp' service to support women's participation in the STEM workforce. My Role
Interaction Designer, Member of a Multinational Team. |
Overview
The number of women in STEM is growing, but it is still predominantly a male's world. Attracting and retaining women into the STEM fields maximizes innovation, creativity, and competitiveness as they bring a diversity of thoughts and solutions.

Literature Review
A literature review was carried out to understand the topic and find out how others defined the challenge. A simple diagram was used to present the topics and categories of scientific discoveries to date. |
|
Experts Interviews
To continue the research phase, a series of interviews were conducted with 3 women currently in STEM positions. The interviews allowed me to gain the valuable perspective of experts in the field. |
|
Design Sprint
The design sprint collaborative process was used to find a solution to the project challenge. During the design session, the following methods were used: - Lighting demos to research how others are trying to solve this or a similar problem - HMW to capture opportunities, insights and pain points that can be positively reframed - Crazy 8's to generate as many ideas as possible within a short timeframe - Heat voting to create a heatmap that shows which features the team as a whole thinks is worth prototyping - Storyboard to map out each step of the experience that the team wants to prototype and test |
|
Brand Identity
At this stage of the project, the team focused on creating a brand for the new service. A series of design sessions took place to establish the name, logo, and UI kit to build the initial prototype. |
|
High-Fidelity Prototyping
Step-by-step storyboard sketches of the service experience were turned into the high-fidelity prototype required to test the concept with potential users. |
|
Concept Testing
The working team engaged with four professionals and ran the 5 Act Interview. Each testing session lasted around 30 minutes allowing the team members to validate the DiversItUp prototype. |
|
Testing Results
Identified interview results and key questions were assessed to confirm or deny the need for such a service. A simple scoring matrix was used to measure the results and present them to a wider audience. |
|
Identified Improvements
During the testing sessions the following areas have been identified for improvements: - The website contains too much information - a quick video that introduces the service is recommended. - It's hard to identify what the website is about at quick glance - connect review is required. - The font size is too small to read at times - font size improvements are required. - The word 'Role Model' feels like it's someone inaccessible - the word 'mentor' is recommended instead. - More information about different tools - short videos explaining how the tools work are recommended. - Just the digital version of the toolkit is needed - "Let's take care of the trees..." |
